Our School
Maitai School provides high quality specialised teaching and learning programmes for students who are verified under the Ongoing and Reviewable Resourcing Scheme (ORRS), using a holistic model that includes specialists, therapists, families / whanau and the local community.
In the words of the Education Review Office, at Maitai School, “the sharing of ideas and high quality practice promotes continuous improvement and better outcomes for students”. Our excellent specialist / therapy service provision was confirmed in December 2010 by the Ministry of Education in a three yearly review, carried out for all ORRS fund- holders, against the Specialist Service Standards. Situated close to the central business district of Nelson, Maitai School enjoys the proximity of amenities that serve and support the school. Our satellite classes at Auckland Point and Victory Schools are an integral part of our school, with all our students benefiting from a wide range of learning opportunities in classrooms as well as in other educational settings.
As the only Special School in Nelson, Maitai School’s catchment area extends across the wider Nelson region, supporting students from five to twenty-one years of age. Students may enrol at five years of age and move through our satellite classes to senior school, or they can choose to come into our Base School at different times in their school career, to access programmes that meet their needs for that time in their life.
Special Education Itinerant Service
An important aspect of our school is the work performed by the Maitai Special Education Itinerant Teacher Service. Through this initiative, students with ORRS funding who are enrolled with their local school, and their teachers, may access specialist-teaching support. Currently we provide this support in three schools.
